Keewatin Boarding Home, Winnipeg, Manitoba - 1989
Client: NWT Department of Health
Building type: Health, Housing, Social Services
Residents of the Keewatin Region in the Northwest Territories receive tertiary level health services by being flown to Winnipeg. While waiting to receive medical care, patients reside in a boarding home. We examined the relative costs and benefits of three options to improve the Keewatin Boarding Home: renovate the existing facility, relocate to a more suitable existing building, or construct a new facility. We assessed the demand for services; defined the facilities program; identified properties that could be purchased and modified to suit the program; and conducted comparative cost analyses. We coordinated input from consultants, users and clients in Winnipeg, Yellowknife and Rankin Inlet. The conclusion was to build a new 960 square metre facility. Completed in 1989.
