We prepared a comprehensive update of the School District Facilities Plan for a growing part of Greater Vancouver. We found that new and expanded facilities are required in the parts of the district that are growing, while schools in some areas will remain underutilized. In addition, in pursuit of the key objective to improve the safety and quality of school facilities, many schools require upgrading or replacement. The secondary plan we formulated proposed the immediate replacing two secondary schools and the future consolidation of two underutilized secondary schools. The elementary plan called for additions or replacements for seven schools, plus the construction of a new school in a rapidly growing urban development area. Completed in 2015.

We established the appropriate capacity for an urban secondary school based on anticipated future enrolment and the status of adjacent secondary schools. Our work became part of a Project Definition Report for the proposed replacement or redevelopment of the school. We concluded that the school be built with an initial capacity for 1,300 students. In addition, we recommended that the design of the school show how the facility could be easily expanded by up to 200 additional spaces, and that the strategy for allowing future expansion could include building the core functions for a 1,500-space school. Completed in 2014.

Facilities Plan Update, North Vancouver School District, BC - 2013

Building type:

We prepared an update to a long-term comprehensive district-wide facilities plan for the North Vancouver School District we completed in 2007. Our revised enrolment forecasts were based on changes to the Official Community Plans for both the City of North Vancouver and the District of North Vancouver. These changes as well as demographic changes resulted in anticipated modest enrolment growth in the medium term. In addition, our revised plan incorporated recent school closures as well as the implementation of full day kindergarten and other educational programs. Our assessment of assets referenced recent province-wide building assessments and analyses of seismic risk. We also examined the potential long-term need for unused school district property to determine the advisability of property disposal. Completed in 2013.
