Cowichan and Chemainus Secondary Schools, Duncan and Chemainus, BC - 1994

Client:
Building type:

Secondary students in School District 65 were accommodated in two locations: the Cowichan Secondary School in Duncan, which offers programs for Grades 10-12, and Chemainus Secondary School in Chemainus, which offers programs for Grades 8-12. The schools required significant upgrading or replacement. We prepared facility studies to define the most appropriate strategy for accommodating students at the two schools taking into consideration the future role of the schools within the District, the technical capacity of the existing facilities to fulfill this role, and the potential of the facilities for modification to meet the needs of its students. Completed in 1994

Bonner and Quamichan Secondary Schools, Duncan, BC - 1994

Building type:

In conjunction with the opening of the new Francis Kelsey Secondary School, the grade configuration of both Quamichan Middle School in Duncan and George Bonner Junior Secondary School in Mill Bay were to change from Grades 7 to 9 to Grades 6 to 8. In the absence of Ministry of Education facilities design guidelines for Middle Schools, we were asked to establish a methodology for re-evaluating the capacities of the two schools. The approach taken involved examining the capacities of each facility as both an elementary and secondary school, based on Ministry guidelines, an analysis of existing building areas, and the informed opinion of building users. Completed in 1994.
